What I bring you is a Chinese Traditional Painting - 职业翻译 Carl Chi - Carl Chi 职业翻译的博客

By Zeng Qinghuai-the Special Assistant of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 29th Beijing Olympic Games

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am delighted to get the chance given by the meeting and I value it very much. I don’t want to only promote myself to you all selfishly through the chance. Although we meet here as strangers, I hope we will be friends after today. Here, I want to share some Chinese stories happened in 2008 with you.

Just recently, we had held the 29th Olympic games successfully. I think, through that grand opening ceremony, you had seen a traditional Chinese ink and wash painting full of Chinese style emotion and good wishes for mankind. Just you all know, we had experienced a particular year of 2008 with tremendous sorrow and at the same time, we shared unlimited honor and glory. I, with my own eyes, saw a centuries old nationality, which obtained its newborn through pain. Now, just like you, we expect the financial storm sweeping the world to end as quickly as possible and the world people always enjoy warm spring breeze forever.

Mr. Chen Xiaoguang, a famous lyrics writer of China and the vice Ministry of Culture, always introduces myself to others saying that I am a flowing sentinel in Chinese circle of literature and art. Of course, it’s just a vivid analogy. Thanks to the work experience and life experience, I was really always working in Chinese literature and art circle. I threw myself into various kinds of large cultural activities fervidly time and again. I, together with my friends, had recorded the real progress of this ancient country with art style and witnessed the culture inspiration for Chinese people brought by economic boom. Until today, I have experienced countless touching in my life. But in the year of 2008, as a Chinese, who was watching the country and doing work with culture vision, I chocked up with emotions. Next, I will share with you the excellent combination between the Olympic Games held in Beijing and Chinese culture. A current Chinese culture scholar with great influence named Yu Dan said that the Olympic Games held in Beijing were “a culture ceremony with very Chinese style.” I think she is right.

The opening ceremony- an incomparable Chinese spirit

We take holding Olympic Games as a century dream of Chinese nationalities. Of course, we still have other ones. But we have sufficient reasons to take the Olympic Games like a century dream. You know, we are a nationality, which was ever treated as “East Asian Sick Man” and only one person was sent to take part in the Games in the past. Once, we lost our Olympic bid and were “defeated”. But, we were never discouraged and made determined and persistent efforts. We promised to the world “We will repay the world five-thousand-year glory if the world gives us a chance of sixteen days. As a result, we got the chance and gave the world a second promise-a distinctive high standard, humanism; technological and green Olympic Games will be held by us. China would hold it with its all efforts. The great performances in the opening and closing ceremony were played with the strongest art power of China.

As a core character and the general director for the performances in the opening and closing ceremonies, Yimou Zhang done a good job with all his experiences in his life including aesthetics, culture meditation, film arts practice and practical performances etc. In the time of two years, he and his team were immersed in the great pleasure and pain for creativity. They were afraid of letting down the century dream of Chinese people and they want to have new great performances. Holding pressure one after another, they made a new scheme and then denied it. They were hit between formulating and denying. Yimou Zhang, who was called “devil” and “master” at the same time by his team members, always outweighed. We met a cloudy day in Beijing in August 8, 2008, but the opening ceremony of the Olympic games shocked the world and all these news were reported from foreign news agencies. Are these true? Ladies and gentlemen, were you shacked?

Then, what shocked the world?

A majestic hand scroll of painting made by hands and feet

Of course, the Beijing Olympic Games will present and express Chinese culture, but nobody could image such an artful, high-degree difficult and magical expression way. A hand scroll of painting was unfolded on the ground, raised and was returned to the ground again. A mysterious dancer, taking limb as drawing brush and dancing as ink, wrote the characters of mountain, sun and moon. Later on, some children freely and splendidly painted on the scroll. The hand scroll was continually covered. The astonishing part was that some players done the hand scroll painting with their feet. The players commonly done the painting in the process of stepping in the bird’s nest and completed the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Movable type printing was living.

It was the most thrilling scene and was not just a scene. It was a persistent visual shock and a deep culture convulsion. Moreover, it was an artful expression for Chinese culture elements with the most creativity. As we all know, “movable type printing” was a famous technology and culture invention in ancient China. But, even if you were sitting in the ground of the opening ceremony, you could not also learn how those” movable type characters” with great waves moved. At last, you would gasp in admiration when those characters were unfolded and exposed their sweat on the heads and smile on the faces. They were just some people. Such unusual but wonderful thinking, uniform gestures, lively and rich in variety were just like another one new invention. It’s a respect for character and also is an exceeding of culture. Furthermore, it’s still a perfect butting joint for current and ancient China.

Tall Yao Ming and short Lin Hao come to the scene hand in hand.

As a NBA star, Yao is the hero of China. Lin Hao is a victim of China’s Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster and was a juvenile hero standing on the ruins. These two “man” of different two generations with different ages and stature represented the hope in the suffering. It is an ever-bright Olympic spirit and fiery Chinese feelings.

You and Me-an unprecedented theme song

For the theme song of the Olympic Games, each one had his ideas. But we asked the song should be geared to international standards. Its melody, rhythm and lyric should have dance colors and should be easily coordinated with people’s acclaim. But, it was unexpected that the song was so soft and peaceful. It flowed gently and comfortably. You and me, heart in heart, for the dream, walk so far to meet in Beijing…… Come on, my friends. Put out your hands, you and me, heart in heart, in one family forever.

With boundless Chinese bold vision and proud culture demonstration, the song, which was completed only with five beats of China, changed insurgent passion into tenderness; upstair excitement into identity; manly bird’s nest in Beijing into the home of mankind; hot blood into gestures; promises into muttering. It is a country you never know; it’s a country, which is starting to enter a ripe period after its reform and opening policy was adopted by the country 30 years ago; It is a country, which have got ready to develop with scientific modes.
