Shanyin (Ubac) Scholar Tong Yingqiang

会稽山阴,江南名城绍兴之别称也,古来人杰地灵之属。所谓地灵,自春秋战国,已发达于冶金陶瓷之业,尤以铸青铜剑,天下驰名。次而釀纺织,亦有规模,故称富庶吴。所谓人杰,相传远古帝虞舜曾下驾于此:是地又为大禹治水告成及越王勾践卧薪尝胆发奋图强之处。公元前221年,始皇东巡会稽,令斯相书《会稽铭文》,成为旷世之作。东晋时,大书家王羲之在此任会稽内史,并于永和九年创作了天下第一行书《兰亭序》,兰亭一地自此亦为名彰千秋之书法圣地绍兴名士豈止于此,东汉思想家王充,学者严子陵,以及唐代之李、杜、贺知章、孙信、南宋陆放翁和明代徐文长等,皆有涉会稽之历史文化。

As the another name of the famous city Shaoxing in the regions south of the Yangtze River, Kuiji Shanyin has given birth to numerous great people and is considered as a well-known place. The area has boasted developed metallurgy and ceramic industry, especially is famous for the cast of bronze sword since the ancient warring state period. Besides, the textile industry also presented a large scale. So, the place is blessed with fortune. In addition, according to legend, the ancient emperor Yu Shun ever paid a visit to the place. The hero Dayu once successfully tamed floods here and Goujian, King of the ancient Yue state ever rose with determination to make the country strong. In 221 B.C, the emperor Qin Shihuang started his eastward tour and order his primer Li Si write Kuaiji Inscription, which becomes a masterpiece enjoying everlasting glory. In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the great calligrapher Wang Xi Zhi served as an official here and created the foremost running script in Chinese calligraphy the Lan Ting Xu (Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection) in the ninth year of Yonghe period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the place of Lan Ting has become a mecca since then for calligraphy lovers. Other celebrated persons in the history involved with the region still include Li Bai, Du Fu, He Zhizhang, Sun Xin in Tang Dynasty, Lu Fangwen in the Southern Song Dynasty and Xu Wenchang in Ming Dynasty, to name but just a few.

童君英强亦山阴人氏,虽长成于沪读,然笃厚古典文化,崇古信古好古,有山阴逸士之风。英强好墨翰,上手便接唐人书。初唐楷临之欧、褚二家,用功最勤,举凡《九成宫醴泉铭》、《化度寺碑》、《雁塔圣教序》、《伊阙佛龕碑》,皆揣摩无度。尤于欧书八体书能,笔力劲险,峻于古人,有龙蛇战斗之象,云雾轻笼之势。真行之书出于太令,别成一体,森森焉若武库矛戟(《书论》)及诸书如熟驭战马,举动从人,而别有一种骄色……其状若严严奇峰之峻,英英秾秀之华,翩翩自得,如飞举之仙,爽爽孤骞,类逸群之鹤。(《米芾续书评》)之论体悟良深。英强自谓于此至多心得亦自信可以称为解人。

Although grown up in Shanghai with his ancestral home in Shanyin, Mr. Tong deeply love Chinese classical culture, worship, believe and respect the ancient things who truly a style follower of the recluse from Shanyin. He is fond of calligraphy and firstly has a careful study for the writings of the Tang Dynasty, especially the regular script from Master Ouyang Xun and Chu Suiliang. He benefits from the excessive study from the classic writings such as Jiucheng Palace Sweet Spring Inscription, Huadu Monastery Stele, Wild Goose Pagoda Confucianism Preface, Yique Shrine Stele etc. Particularly, the calligraphy written by Ouyang Xun show special style with powerful stroke, natural and unrestrained style. In addition, the Theory of Calligraphy and other works are characterized by magnificence, simplicity, grace, excelling and unhurried styles, which is just like the comments by the grand calligrapher Mi Fu in his writing the Extended Book View. According to Mr. Tong, he has learned a lot and mastered the tricks and experiences from these aforesaid masters who could be called an empathetic person with self-confidence.

除唐楷外,英强还旁涉魏书诸体。以次之雄强开张,补彼之安雅含敛之不足。其中南朝宋正书碑刻《爨龙额碑》及北魏正书碑刻《张猛龙碑》为其主要日课,愈久则体验愈深。尤其后者,以近人沈曾植曾评说:此碑风力危峭,奄有钟繇、梁鹄胜境,而终幅不杂一分笔??碑字大小略殊,当于大处观其轩豁,小处识其沉至,于英强补益最深,使其对书法本体之美更增人里之识。举踪碑习帖而论,英强学书似乎寻常之径,然因其取法用法不蹈寻常,所创自不寻常也。

Apart from the regular script of Tang Dynasty, Mr. Tong also dips into the various calligraphy styles of Wei Dynasty to supplement his insufficiency. He has mainly benefited much and acquired in-depth experience from the Cuan Longyan Gravestone of the Song period of the Southern Dynasties and especially the Zhang Menglong Stele in the Northern Wei Dynasty in his study over the past days. The contemporary scholar Shen Zengzhi ever commented the Zhang Menglong Stele, “the stele expresses magnificent and strange style surpassing the realm of the great calligraphers Zhong Yao and Liang Hu. From the overall writing we cannot see slim character mixed in. The characters are nearly same in size, which seems spacious and bright in general view and serenity specifically. Thus, Mr. Tong has a further understanding for the inner beauty of calligraphy. He naturally create remarkable result in calligraphy by adopting uncommon skills and usage in spite of an ordinary way for calligraphy study.

八十年代,英强曾东渡留学,归后事商至今,虽百端待理,但酷爱艺术之心终不能释。习书之外,英强偏好古典红木家具,此中以紫檀收藏既精且贵者,确为常人所难能企及。鉴于此,予曾为其做斋馆号紫珍堂,一指其紫檀藏品之珍贵;又紫珍沪语谐音为指真意为可信认真,英强引为座右。

英强毕竟为书道中人。书之妙道,神采为上,形质次之,兼之者方可绍于古人。谨录王僧虔《笔意赞》语,预与童君共勉。

Mr. Tong ever studied abroad in Japan in 1980s,

When coming back, he still takes up his art though being engaged in a great number of commercial issues. And he also have a preference for classical redwood furniture and his collection for rosewood is more rare and precious than others. For this reason, I ever name his mansion as “Zi Zhen Tang (Precious Rosewood House” to implicate his rare and precious collection, as well as his credible and earnest nature, which has been taken as the motto by Mr. Tong.

After all, Mr. Tong is the person involved in calligraphy field. Here, I would like to cite the words of Wang Sengqian in his Praise for the Calligraphy Style, “The tricky and ingenuity of calligraphy firstly comes from mien and then the form quality. The combination of the two could inherit the great achievements of ancient masters.
